If you suffer from allergies, one of the best things you can do for your health is to invest in an air purifier. Unlike pharmaceuticals, air purifiers work as a way to prevent you from being exposed to allergens, not just try and control your body’s reaction after the fact. For many people, allergies are much more than just a nuisance. They can threaten the overall health of the allergy sufferer. Allergies can affect your ability to sleep, disrupt your ability to concentrate, and can lead to infections and other respiratory ailments. In severe cases you can even develop asthma as a result of your allergies. You can avoid all of these effects with an air purifier.

What Causes Allergies

About twenty to thirty percent of the population suffers from some type of allergy. The most common airborne allergens are dust, pollen, pet dander and mould spores. Most people breathe in small amounts of these substances all of the time without any problems. However, when you have allergies, your body overreacts to the presence of even the tiniest particle. Your immune system goes into overdrive trying to eliminate the particles from your body. This overreaction is what produces everything from a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing.

While allergy medications are often effective, they may come with unpleasant side effects. Additionally, some people who take them frequently find that they are not as effective over time. Drugs such as antihistamines are designed to keep the body from overreacting to the presence of the allergens but, if you can remove the allergens from the air by way of an air purifier, you may find that your dependence on those medications is greatly reduced along with their related side effects.

How an Air Purifier Works

The best air purifiers have a “True HEPA” filter that captures particles as small as .3 microns from the air. The purifier works by circulating air and trapping contaminants as the air passes through the filter. Most purifiers actually have one or more pre-filters that catch larger particles, keeping the HEPA filter cleaner and more effective at catching the smallest allergens from the air. Some air purifiers also use an ionizer to charge the particles in the air causing them to cling together in larger particles. An ionizer works best in combination with a HEPA filter and a strong pre-filter.

Air purifiers are most effective in small spaces. Each air purifier is designed to work within a specific sized space. If your space is larger than the design specifications of the air purifier, it will not effectively eliminate the allergens from the air. For larger spaces you will need a purifier with larger rated coverage area, or you may need to use multiple purifiers.

Improving Quality of Life

Your home should be a place to relax. But, when you suffer from allergies, you are either waiting for the next attack or you are regularly taking allergy pills that could make you drowsy, drain your energy, and make you feel dehydrated. Sometimes, even with allergy medications, you still have to suffer through allergy attacks. An air purifier improves the quality of your life by removing the triggers of these attacks from the air.

Even if you were to shut every window and close every door, allergens would still be circulating inside your house. Having an air purifier allows you to be free from allergy attacks, reduce your dependence on medications and to live a quality of life that you deserve.
